Sarah Curtis is a Senior Lecturer and Academic Course Leader for Biomedical Science at University of Gloucestershire.
Her research spans cardiovascular and cancer gene therapy, infectious disease and translational biomedical science. Sarah’s current research focuses on the development and validation of biomarker testing in cardiac rehabilitation and investigating the impact of obesity in infectious disease. Her work aims to bridge laboratory discovery with clinical application, helping to improve patient care through innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
In addition to her research activities, Sarah contributes to the wider scientific community through editorial and peer-review roles. She served as invited co-guest Editor for a Special Issue of Pathogens and has reviewed manuscripts for leading journals including Clinical & Translational Immunology, Cancers, Journal for Immunotherapy of Cancer, Plos One, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, and Inflammation Research.

Sarah leads teaching across a range of modules within the undergraduate Biomedical Science programme, including Introduction to Biomedical Science, Cell and Tissue Pathology, Virology, Pharmacology and Toxicology. She also contributes to the delivery of Genomics and Bioinformatics, Research Skills and Proposal, and Human Nutrition, as well as teaching across other undergraduate programmes in Bioscience. Sarah leads undergraduate research project proposals and supervises dissertation projects, supporting students in the design, execution and dissemination of their research.
In addition, Sarah coordinates NHS placement opportunities with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, helping students gain valuable professional experience within laboratory healthcare settings.
Sarah’s research career has encompassed international experience and multidisciplinary biomedical research spanning molecular genetics, gene therapy, immunology, infectious disease and translational medicine in world-leading laboratories.
Following completion of her PhD, she undertook postdoctoral training in molecular biology at the Bosch Institute, University of Sydney, Australia (2007-2010) under the supervision of Professor Juergen Reichardt.
From 2012-2014, whilst working with Professor Sarah George at the Bristol Heart Institute, University of Bristol, she developed a novel adenoviral-mediated gene therapy to prevent late vein graft failure using pre-clinical cardiovascular models.
Between 2015 and 2018, in Professor Alan Parker’s laboratory in the Division of Cancer and Genetics at Cardiff University, Sarah developed novel adenovirus vectors retargeted specifically to ovarian cancer cells.
In 2018, she joined the Cancer Immunology Group led by Professor Andrew Godkin and Professor Awen Gallimore at Cardiff University’s Division of Infection and Immunity. There she led a team evaluating a novel influenza A virus-based vaccine strategy using pre-clinical models to enhance anti-viral immunity.
Her current research programme involves collaboration with academic, industry partners and the NHS and includes focusing on the validation of capillary blood biomarkers in cardiac rehabilitation and investigating the impact of obesity on influenza A virus disease outcomes.
