Between 2014 and 2023 Tom’s time as Head of Architecture was invested in establishing a new “school” of architecture at Falmouth University, exploring this unique geographic, social and cultural environment through a lens of Radical Regionalism.
He has extensive architectural practice experience, leading his own practice from 2012 to 2020, building upon the skills and knowledge he gained working for award winning practices in London. He has extensive project architect experience working on numerous national award-winning buildings.
Tom is in the final phases of a PhD by Design at Oxford Brookes University which investigates the potential of hyper-local, biobased materials and the new tectonics of climate action to offer alternatives to the current defunct design and construction status-quo.
Tom has taught across all levels of undergraduate and MArch level qualifications, as a Design Fellow at the Cambridge University and as Head of Architecture and Course leader at Falmouth University.
His pedagogic approach has been developing through an attitude to place and design through making. Many projects have been driven by the belief that architecture is best learnt through haptic processes, craft and the acts of making. This deliberate multidisciplinary approach between the skills of design and the acts of making are engaged to help students make connections between observing, drawing, making and building.
Most recently Tom’s teaching approach has recognised the interconnected poly-crisis of the climate emergency, biodiversity loss and housing emergency. This focus attends to a renewed concern for the planet, people and how they can be involved and engaged with radical acts of difference, aimed at shifting the status quo.
Tom’s research, currently focussed through his PhD by Design is interested in how an approach and attitude to designing needs to be critically informed by a bioregional approach, recognising the significance of hyper-local material resources and developing new ways of working with these materials.
He has regularly presented his developing research to both academic and architectural practice audiences.
Tom is a RIBA Studio examiner and has extensive experience as an External Examiner at other institutions.
He often chairs talks with external groups and partners such as Terrain Talks.
