Brief Description

This module introduces the process of scientific thinking and key scientific methods, including laboratory and field techniques. Methods of data collection are covered, as are skills for locating current research, writing scientific papers, and referencing appropriately. The module also forms the basis for personal development planning provision in the biological sciences, and develops a range of learning and personal skills. The module provides the foundation skills needed for successful study across the Animal Biology and Biology degree programmes.

Indicative Syllabus

There are two elements to this module: laboratory skills and transferrable personal skills.

The first element develops key skills for the bioscience degrees. Various laboratory and field methods will be covered, introducing students to a range of techniques.

The second element introduces students to the principles of processes of Personal Development Planning (PDP), and addresses learning and personal skills development. Key skills such as literature searches, referencing, preparing essays and scientific papers and simple data handling. In addition, students will be required to reflect on their learning and employability skills, and plan for on-going personal and career development.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand and demonstrate the importance of effective study skills to successful study
  2. Demonstrate a solid grounding in laboratory techniques and the ability to apply these to specific projects with tutor guidance
  3. Demonstrate a range of key transferable skills, including communication and teamwork
  4. Understand the importance of PDP and transferable skills to employability and engage in personal development planning, and planning for employability
