Why choose UoG?

Be inspired to change the future of physical education and sport within schools. Gain hands-on experience via a range of placements, embedded throughout your degree.

Top reasons to study this course

Our course has a clear focus – we want you to think beyond the traditional physical education (PE) curriculum and become agents of change in the environments you go on to work in. While traditional activities are integral to the PE curriculum, they don’t suit everyone, so we have scope for more inclusive, innovative and challenging activities to be considered within the school environment.

We’ll help you develop knowledge and understanding in a range of activities, both traditional and non-traditional. We want to develop your interest in both primary and secondary PE to allow you to become a teacher, leader and educator for the future and inspire young people to participate in PE, physical activity and sport.

Throughout the course you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of a broad and varied range of topics based in theory and practice. Your lectures and seminars will be taught through interactive and engaging student-centred approaches.

You’ll explore a range of contexts and disciplines, alongside 5 themes: inclusion, equity and inequality, identity and self, curriculum and pedagogy, governance and management, and growth development and maturation.

Our progressive programme helps you develop throughout the course. Initially you’ll plan and deliver engaging sessions to ensure you can be inclusive but still challenging for your participants. We’ll look at teaching approaches, inclusive delivery and potential barriers to participation.

Moving forwards into your second year we ask you to consider your philosophy of teaching and engage with a broader range of theories. In your final year you’ll refine and reflect on your development and consider classroom-based aspects of the PE curriculum delivered in schools.

Also in your final year you’ll have the opportunity to undertake a major project, carrying out an in-depth study within an area that interests you.

The majority of graduates from this course go on to work as teachers either in secondary or primary settings via a teaching training program. This includes working as a specialist PE teacher, SEND teaching, primary and early years practitioners.

Placements are integrated throughout the course, so by graduation students have built up valuable experience across a range of settings, and gained key skills employers are looking for

Additionally, our graduates have also embarked on a range of careers using the skills they’ve developed at UoG, including the armed forces and local police forces.
