The course has a clear focus – we want you to think beyond the traditional physical education (PE) curriculum and to become agents of change in the environments you go on to work in. While traditional activities are integral to the PE curriculum, they don’t suit everyone, so we have scope for more inclusive, innovative and challenging activities to be considered within the school environment.
We’ll help you develop knowledge and understanding in a range of activities, both traditional and non-traditional. We want to develop your interest in both primary and secondary PE to allow you to become a teacher, leader and educator for the future – who inspires young people to participate in PE, physical activity and sport. Throughout the course you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of a broad and varied range of topics based in theory and practice.
We have a progressive programme helps you develop throughout the course. Initially you’ll plan and deliver engaging sessions to ensure you can be inclusive but still challenging for your participants. We’ll look into teaching approaches, inclusive delivery and potential barriers to participation. Moving forwards into your second year we ask you to consider your philosophy of teaching and engage with a broader range of theories. In your final you’ll refine and reflect on your development and consider classroom-based aspects of the PE curriculum delivered in schools. In your second and third years you also get some choice of modules to allow you to specialise in certain topics and areas of interest.
The course is designed to prepare students for various careers including postgraduate teacher training schemes. Our students are guaranteed an interview for a PGCE course at the University of Gloucestershire*.

Study style
Our lecturers are highly qualified, with experience and achievements, including qualified teachers who have taught within schools. The course includes a balance of theory and practical learning throughout the three years. While the style of delivery will vary across modules, we’d like you to join in with your learning and take part in discussions, debates, tasks and practicals throughout the course. This helps you to not only learn theory, but how apply it within practice too.
Assessments are broad and varied. Each module is different in terms of the number, weighting and length of assessments. We acknowledge the importance of varied practice in the workforce and therefore have assessments that provide a range of experiences for our students. These include some key features you’ll need if you move into teaching, so we primarily use assessments that are coursework based. Some examples include practice delivery of leading sessions, lesson and teaching resource design, presentations, essays, podcasts and more.
