I am a keen sportsperson having previously competed internationally in athletics and, as I transitioned into coaching, I became passionate about coach education and development. This led me to my current role as a Senior Lecturer in Sport Education and Coaching at University of Gloucestershire.
Alongside my lecturing role, I have been able to develop and grow my work in coach development through partners such as Gloucester Rugby where I have mentored some of their academy coaches as well as leading their development programme for the performance team.
I have also had the opportunity to work with World Netball and England Netball, where I have designed and delivered coach education to trainee teachers in Addis Ababa; Ethiopia, and to local coaches in Gaborone; Botswana as well as being an assessor for level 1 and level 2 coaching qualifications.
In addition to the coach education experiences with World Netball, I have supported the online commentary team for the U21 World Cup in 2017 and was part of a team that selected ‘player of the match’ and ‘player of the tournament’ at the Netball World cup in 2019. These opportunities have allowed me to experience different cultural expectations, coaches needs and approaches to learning as well as a better understanding of the elite game and requirements.

Within my role as a senior lecturer, I have had the opportunity to design and deliver sessions across both undergraduate and postgraduate levels for both coaching and physical education, primarily focusing on innovative approaches to delivery for teachers and coaches, coach development and coach education.
The role has also allowed me to work previously with external governing bodies, British Table Tennis, British Equestrian and British Rowing, to deliver on their UKCC qualifications focusing on coaching behaviours, coaching knowledge, and coach development.
My main area of research explores the impact of coaching behaviours and pedagogy on the development of players decision-making in elite sporting environments. My doctoral thesis focused on an investigation into the development of an environment to encourage better decision-making in players whilst exploring the challenges associated within elite sport that may prevent this.
In addition to this, I am passionate about investigating coach education and the impact of developing bespoke individualised programmes to benefit coaches in their unique settings.
Alison is the Partnership Collaboration Lead for the School of Sport and Exercise. This requires Alison to develop validated and franchised courses with external colleges and manage and monitor these courses once they have been successfully validated.
