Your interview
In the School of Health and Social Care, we are committed to creating a ‘Culture of Care’. Our interviews are designed to support you in understanding more about the requirements and demands of the course and ensure that each individual who is successful has the best opportunity to achieve their potential. We will be assessing candidates against the Professional Capability Framework (PCF) at entry level – details of these requirements can be found at www.basw.co.uk. The interview is a two-way process, so please ask any questions that you may have. Good luck.
Essential information
You will be invited to either full morning or afternoon interview session. Attending the event is not just about the interview; we want you to view our specialised facilities, attend a group discussion/interview, meet with our academic teams, chat with current ambassadors, tour the campus and visit the accommodation you may be living in. We also welcome parents/guests to our interview day and hold a special Q&A for them whilst you are attending your interview..
During your registration you will be asked to show an official form of ID such as passport or photocard driving licence and complete a Self-Declaration form. After registration the day will be broken into three interview elements; the interview process a 15 minute group work exercise, a 30 minute written reflective exercise and a 20-30 minute interview (which includes a 5 minute presentation); the tone is very supportive and relaxed. Be sure to ask questions and talk to current students about what it’s like to study and live here.
If you have any questions or require more information about your interview, please contact our admissions team on 03330 141414 or email [email protected].
Before the interview process starts you will have a brief presentation explaining more about the course. We also try where possible to allow the opportunity to meet up with current students studying social work. Once you have completed all elements of the interview process and shared your documentation you will be free to leave.
PART 1: Group Work (12 minutes). The group task is designed to test your communication skills, your ability to deliver a coherent argument, how you value others and your group work skills.
PART 2: Reflective Writing Exercise (30 minutes) You will be provided with a reflective writing task and asked to answer several questions. This is to test your written communication, reflective and analytical skills.
PART 3: Interview panel presentation and questions (25 minutes). This will consist of an academic team member and a person with lived experience or social worker interviewing you. To begin the interview, you are required to give a short, five-minute verbal presentation to the interview panel. It should answer the question “What is Social Work and why is it for you?”. Please prepare this in advance and bring with you a prepared 1-page handout to give to the 2 panel members showing your use of IT skills. You do not have access to a computer for this presentation, but can use creative methods to present. You should refer to the handout given to the panel members in your presentation. You can use que cards to assist your presentation if you wish. You will then be asked a serious of questions from the panel members to get to know you and test your knowledge, skills and values against the Professional Capability Framework Entry Level domains which can be found here.
