University lecture to look at the culture of ageing

A public lecture at the University of Gloucestershire will look at how popular culture – from film and television to popular music and advertising – shapes our view of growing old. In her inaugural lecture, Ros Jennings, Professor in Ageing, Culture and Media, will explore the negative comparisons between old age and youth and how this treatment has led to the ageing process becoming something to be feared.

Ros became Professor of Ageing, Culture and Media in 2015 and is Director of the Centre for Women, Ageing and Media (WAM) and Head of Postgraduate Research at the University of Gloucestershire. She has authored and contributed to many books and articles and is currently co-writing a book about ageing and popular music in Europe, which is due to be published in 2017.

About her lecture, Ros Jennings said: “this lecture is for anybody who is interested in challenging dominant negative thinking about growing old. I will discuss ways to think about time, generation, diversity and the role that media plays and can play in our lives as we age. I hope to engage the audience with new academic approaches to thinking about how we grow old.”

‘Ageing in, and with, popular culture’ will take place on 22 June from 6pm at the Park campus, Cheltenham. Places are free but booking is required.
