Media School wins new teaching excellence award

The University of Gloucestershire’s Media School has won a new national award that recognises teaching excellence in universities and positive impact on student experience.

Last night members of the Media School received the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) from the Higher Education Academy at an awards ceremony in London.

The University of Gloucestershire was one of 15 universities to reach the final shortlist from more than 185 entries for their annual Media School Festival.

The university was nominated in the ‘students as partners’ category which aims to recognise teaching excellence, celebrate collaborative work in teaching and learning and look to capture the creative and innovative practice that positively impacts on the student experience.

Hundreds of students flocked to the annual Media School Festival in November – now in its third year – which was run by over 50 students alongside teaching and support staff. The week is a cultural and educational event which hosts nationally and internationally-renowned industry practitioners with guests from Sky to BBC and Aardman to Spotify. The 2015 Media Festival brought a total of 62 speakers, with 30 of those being alumni from across the media industry who talked about how they are developing their careers in the media sector.

Tom Soper, Course Leader for Music Business and lead for the Media Festival at the University of Gloucestershire, said: “This is a wonderful achievement and we are very proud of our students, who have made the Festival what it is over the last three years. Now we get the opportunity to share our model of a truly collaborative media festival with the UK and beyond, so there are exciting times ahead.”
