Dr Matthew Andrews is installed as Honorary Lay Canon at Gloucester Cathedral

University of Gloucestershire’s Dr Matthew Andrews has been appointed to the College of Canons at Gloucester Cathedral in recognition of his work in strengthening the historic links between the two institutions.

Dr Andrews, the University’s COO and Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Experience, was installed as an Honorary Lay Canon by The Very Reverend Andrew Zihni, Dean of Gloucester, at a ceremony at the Cathedral.

Being appointed to the College of Canons at Gloucester Cathedral by the Dean, in consultation with the Bishop of Gloucester, the Right Reverend Rachel Treweek, recognises the significant part played by an individual in the wider life of the Church in the area.

The College of Canons play an integral role in the governance of the Cathedral, supporting its mission and ministry, and acting as ambassadors in fostering connections with the wider diocese and its churches.

Dr Andrews said: “I was flattered and extremely pleased to be invited by the Dean, The Very Reverend Andrew Zihni, to become a member of the College of Canons at Gloucester Cathedral.

“This invitation recognises the close and enduring relationship between the Cathedral and University, which I have been pleased to help strengthen.

“That relationship is developed every day by academic and professional colleagues seeking new opportunities for academic engagement and initiatives.

“I look forward to becoming even more closely involved in the life of the Cathedral and seeking new ways in which our two organisations can grow together for the benefit of the people of Gloucester and the county of Gloucestershire.”

Historic links between University and Cathedral

The Very Reverend Andrew Zihni said: “Over the course of the past 16 months as Dean, I have very much appreciated the important relationship and the historic links between the Cathedral and the University of Gloucestershire.

“I have been especially grateful for Dr Andrews’ commitment to this relationship and all that he has done to strengthen the links between the University and the Cathedral.

“I am delighted that he accepted my invitation to become an Honorary Lay Canon of Gloucester Cathedral and a member of the College of Canons.”
