Back to stories listingHaving graduated from Animal Biology at the University of Gloucestershire, Richie Fourie is now working with rhinos after taking his studies to the next level.
Richie is studying an MSc by Research and based in South Africa. “I loved the course as an undergraduate and the lecturers were absolutely brilliant in their teaching style and willingness to help us, so when I was offered a spot on an MSc by Res working with them, I was absolutely going to take it!”
Richie has continued in the same subject area as his undergraduate degree, and he is following a lifelong passion to work with animals.
“I love animals and South Africa, as I was born and raised there, so getting an opportunity to do research on a game farm on really cool nocturnal animals was a huge draw for me. Working and doing research on a game farm in South Africa is a real treat and something that is fulfilling the childhood dreams I had of being a ranger in the Kruger National Park.”
And it is an experience which will make memories for a lifetime, as well as working towards his career.
“Getting to work with people so passionate about conservation has been an amazing experience. If I’d have to pin it down, an absolute high has been getting to be involved in a rhino horn trimming, to watch the vets work and be involved in a key part of conserving such an iconic African species is something I’ll never forget.
“Going on the skills that I have amassed at university I hopefully am going to work on a wildlife reserve or game farm in South Africa.”
