I was the very first Influencer Marketing Intern for Gymshark

BA (Hons) Marketing, Advertising and Branding with Placement year at Gymshark

“I chose to study at UoG because of the Marketing, Branding and Advertising course, and the very practical nature of its modules in comparison to those offered at other universities. My course allowed me to gain real experience, work on live briefs and subsequently grow in confidence and prepare me for the world of work.

“For my year in industry, I secured a placement year at Gymshark as their very first Influencer Marketing Intern. From never working in the influencer industry before, to facilitating PR gifting and working on many influencer activations from start to finish, I have adored the past 13 months and learnt so much. During my time at Gymshark I oversaw 150+ talent in a Black Friday campaign and managed, negotiated and delivered content from 30+ influencer’s directly from across the globe for live campaigns. I also filmed content, pitched creative ideas, and managed talent on shoots days to create social content for use on Gymshark social channels, email marketing or paid ads.

“My proudest moment on placement was pitching and working with a fantastic events team to curate the most viral charity focused influencer activation Gymshark has ever seen, with the KingofChemo Gymshark London Run club event in June which hit over 26 million views on TikTok.

“My time at UoG had previously bolstered my interest in working for Gymshark as I had the chance to complete an assignment on the brand within my first year. In addition, my time as president of the UOG marketing society in second year helped me establish core employability skills including organisation, communication, and teamwork. These skills all undoubtedly contributed to a new self-confidence and belief in my abilities within marketing and pushed me to chase the career and placement I wanted.

“I applied for this role around October of second year and kept an eye on the Gymshark website for any opportunities that interested me. I was the only successful applicant for this role against over 700+ others, but I couldn’t have done this without the support of the University.

“As UoG is a smaller Uni, it allowed me to build better relationships with my lecturers and consequently have better support in preparation for my interview. Most notably, one of my marketing lecturers, Sam Copland, gave his time freely to listen to my ideas, run-through my interview and provide any advice he could from his own experiences in industry, to ensure I felt my most confident when applying to this role.

“My advice for anyone searching for a placement year would be to apply early and apply even if you don’t think you have a shot at getting the role. A genuine interest and drive to learn is what brands will look for when hiring.”
