PGCE Secondary Geography student Hope explains how a PGCE will push you but also be one of the most fulfilling things you can do.
“I started my PGCE knowing I wanted to become a geography teacher. It was always the subject I felt most passionate about and sharing that passion with the next generation just felt right. If you’re thinking about doing a PGCE, it’s completely normal to feel nervous – I definitely was. Walking into classrooms for the first time and trying to find your feet can be daunting. But one thing you quickly realise is that you’re not doing it alone. You get to know the people on your course so quickly, and that sense of support makes a huge difference. The subject knowledge leaders are also incredible, they’re always there when you need help, advice, or even just a boost in confidence (which I personally needed at times). You’re constantly supported, even on the days when you doubt yourself.
That being said, it’s important to be honest, the PGCE is intense. It’s challenging, fast-paced, and there will be moments where it feels tough. But it is also incredibly rewarding. There is nothing quite like seeing a student have that ‘lightbulb moment’ when something finally clicks, or hearing a simple ‘thanks for the lesson’ and knowing you’ve made a difference. Those small moments make everything worth it. If you’re considering a PGCE, go in knowing it will push you, but also knowing that it’s one of the most fulfilling things you can do.”
