Cyber Security Technical Professional Apprenticeship BSc (Hons)

University of Gloucestershire

What is Cyber Security Technical Professional Apprenticeship BSc (Hons)?

Our Cyber Security Technical Professional Apprenticeship is an exciting programme designed to give learners key knowledge, understanding, skills and experience that are sought after by employers.

Cyber security technical professionals operate in business or technology/engineering functions across a range of sectors.  They normally work with a considerable degree of autonomy and lead teams that research, analyse, model, assess and manage cyber security risks. They also design, develop, justify, manage and operate secure solutions, and detect and respond to incidents. They work in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, standards and ethics.

Study style

On this programmes, learners are assessed through coursework, essays and case studies. Each module is delivered in a one week block of lectures, tutorials and seminars, making it easier for learners to fit study around work and personal commitments.

In year one, learners develop a grounding in computers, systems and networks, particularly in relation to identifying and preventing security breaches. An independent work-based project underpins classroom content, so apprentices are applying their learning in the workplace.

Learners have access to our dedicated cyber security labs, equipped with industry-leading hardware and software. They learn to identify security breaches and implement solutions using the latest industry tools and techniques.

Through hands-on experience of analysing secure networks and websites, learners develop skills around advanced networking, malware identification, ethical hacking and secure coding. Areas of study include network design (the physical securing of network components), operating systems security (with a focus on Windows, MAC OS and Linux) and information security (keeping cyber information secure in a business environment). As such, learners are equipped with valuable skills they can immediately apply in the workplace.

Entry requirements

    • Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their apprenticeships. Most candidates will have A levels (or equivalent) or existing relevant Level 3 qualifications, as well as English, Maths and ICT at Level 2. Other relevant or prior experience may also be considered as an alternative. Level 2 English and Maths must be achieved before the End Point Assessment part of the apprenticeship.

Apprentices should be in fulltime employment (at least 30 hours per week) throughout the duration of their apprenticeship, and 6 hours of their contracted working week must be spent doing ‘off-the-job’ training.

Employers may wish to set additional entry requirements to suit their organisational needs.

Andrew Carr – ICT Integrations Team Leader, Cumbria Constabulary

I have enjoyed a lot of the block-mode lectures and the interaction with my fellow students. The subjects being delivered by the lecturers have been interesting and appropriate for the knowledge I have been hoping to gain. The interaction with the lecturers and other students helps to develop my knowledge beyond the academic subject by learning and sharing real-world experiences.

The university provide good quality lecturers and lectures on a diverse range of subjects. They have been good at offering remote learning options over the last 12 months which I appreciate given I live so far from the campus.
I am also the Course Representative for this year. I speak to other Course Reps and the Subject Rep to ensure our voice is heard and that all students benefit.
