This module provides opportunity to explore non-traditional and non-commercial aspects of games development through developing interactive and innovative systems that combine both unique hardware and software to push the envelope of games interaction and games outside the scope of games for fun.
The module covers games design fundamentals relating to unique hardware and software interaction, and design innovation in the games industry. Students will be provided with the opportunity to work in teams to develop, test and produce their game design using a variety of hardware and software.
The module will showcase and highlight and discuss existing games and interactive digital art that makes use of games hardware and design techniques. There will be a strong focus on innovation in the field of games, with innovative controls, inclusive play and alternative uses of hardware will be examined.
A student passing this module should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles behind innovative game design for player engagement;
2. Use appropriate planning methodologies to research, design and implement a game from design through to playable prototype;
3. Have an understanding of prototyping techniques used to discover playability or functionality within games and simulation;
4. Develop interactive games, taking inputs from a variety of hardware to produce a range of potential outputs producing varying haptic feedback
