Brief Description

Delivered in two distinct blocks, this module is a comprehensive examination of the way in which the police respond to crime and provides a broad introduction to our system of criminal justice and how it works.

During the first block: students explore the courts and the adversarial system of justice, placing into context the official response to crime.  Students will explore the various stages of the court process and the responsibilities associated with giving evidence in court.  This part of the module includes a field-trip to a local Magistrates’ / Crown Court to explore models of criminal justice theory in practice, and to reinforce learning that has taken place in the classroom, e.g. the stages of the court process and the responsibilities associated with giving evidence.  Students will evaluate how the diversity of individuals and society can impact on the criminal justice system and the importance of valuing diversity and inclusion.  Students will also consider the importance of effective partnership collaboration with respect to offender rehabilitation and desistance.

During the second block; students use the knowledge they have of the system of justice from block one, and focus on evidence and crime scenes, allowing them to see the processes which occur before a trial begins and how actions at this stage impact on whether convictions can be achieved in court.  Learning covers the skills and knowledge required for crime scene management and the forensic recovery of evidence through a series of role-play activities which take place in our dedicated Crime Scene House.  Students work in groups when undertaking these exercises and activity is recorded and / or live-streamed for the purposes of debriefing and evaluation to inform and shape future performance.

  • Criminal Justice – Outcome 11 – indicative content 11.1 – 11.4

This includes:  Exploring the institutions of Criminal Justice; Youth Justice; Drug interventions; Criminological theories of offending; Forensic investigation; Exploring criminal justice process.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Describe the merits and problems associated with various criminal justice agencies
  2. Show a clear understanding of  the way historical and contemporary policies, laws and criminal case studies are part of the development of the Criminal Justice System
  3. Identify the links between criminological theory and criminal justice agencies
  4. Have acquired an appreciation of the processes of criminal justice
  5. Understand the place and role of evidence in the process of securing convictions
