Brief Description

This module is concerned with analysing competing environmental philosophies and applying them to understanding a particular global sustainability issue in a local context. It aims to provide a structure in which students can explore the key issues of Global Sustainability, by applying their disciplinary learning to a real-world local challenge.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1. Critically evaluate the arguments in the development of environmental philosophies in geography and sustainability issues

2. Deploy established techniques of analysis in the principal features of a particular global sustainability issue where there is a relevant local context

3. Evaluate and analyse the interlinkages between the social, economic, political and natural environmental factors at work in their chosen sustainability field, including methods of futures analysis, and apply them to specific real world problems

4. Demonstrate abilities to apply skills in a range of primary and secondary data collection contexts, including practical applications and demonstrating initiative in complex and uncertain real-world situations as appropriate to the focus of study and ways of analysing and presenting the data

5. Critically reflect on the processes involved in learning and applying global sustainability issues to local challenges, working in a team and working with a community, or public or third sector organisation

6. Demonstrate enhanced skills in working effectively within a team, playing a supporting or leading role, negotiating in a professional context, managing conflict and presenting material orally and in report form
