The module is designed to improve your practical research skills, your research knowledge and your ability to reflect on research and its practical applications. Focusing on hands-on research and reflection skill development, sessions will merge learning about research approaches with how to conduct applied empirical research and effectively reflect on it. This module will enable you to negotiate, design, implement and evaluate a research approach, action research initiative or policy review in an advanced work-based project applying your criminological and methodological knowledge in the workplace. At the heart of the module will be discussions and reflections on our roles as researchers, as knowledge-generators and as users of knowledge from the research work of others. The content of the module will be determined by your own specific learning requirements, your work context and the needs of your organisation.

A student passing this module should be able to:
1. Demonstrate criminological knowledge and methodological understanding including locating, understanding and critically evaluating relevant research and sources of information.
2. Identify and conduct a relevant and appropriate research project in a professional/ work-based context including demonstrating ability to systematically plan and conduct research; make sound judgements in conducting research and reflect on and critically evaluate the research, their own performance as a researcher and the notion of evidence-based or learning organisations.
3. Critically discuss and implement research methodologies appropriate to work-based settings including aims, outcomes, outputs and impact of research.
4. Generate transformative, innovative and/or ‘user focused’ solutions using on appropriate literature, creativity and partnership working including recommendations for improvements and further research.
