A rewarding journey to becoming a data science professional

Placements, an internship and the Office for Students Scholarship provided Sandra Nwobi with an immersive and experiential learning journey throughout her MSc in Data Science.

“I’ve had the privilege of participating in diverse programmes that have significantly enriched my academic journey at UoG. Getting the Office for Student Scholarship (OFS) played a crucial role in alleviating the financial burden of my studies and allowing me to channel more focus and energy into my academic goals.

“A pivotal opportunity presented itself when I applied for an internship with Health Data Research UK, leading to a connection with NHS Scotland. I secured a placement in the medicated assisted treatment implementation support team (MIST) at Public Health Scotland, extending from an initial two-month period to an immersive nine-month placement due to my dedication and passion to make a positive impact by leveraging data and, of course, my unwavering enthusiasm.

“During this period, I worked with real-world data, contributed to the transition of MIST data collection from an Excel spreadsheet to Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap), developed comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs), led REDCap training for up to 50 Scottish government stakeholders, connected REDCap to R Studio via API, derived insights from analysis and developed the R Shiny app to impact decision-making.

“Notably, the Data Science MSc has enhanced my technical skills and given me an experiential learning opportunity that is priceless. The University’s renowned faculty members’ guidance and research have sparked my fascination with AI, particularly generative AI. UoG’ssupport system, my course tutor, and lecturers have been instrumental in my success. The dedicated career studio team supported me in preparing me for placement interviews, ensuring I could effectively showcase my abilities and experiences.”
