Embrace new experiences to achieve your dream

Having always wanted to work with weddings, Lucy Hicks found what she was looking for at the University of Gloucestershire.

“The course seemed structured and the modules all seemed relevant to the ‘real world’ and interesting. I also met some lecturers at an open day and they seemed knowledgeable and friendly.”

Lucy, who graduated in 2013, was able to follow her interests around the course. As a Music Scholar, she sung with the University of Gloucestershire and Community Choir, and is still a member today, singing in last year’s Christmas Carol Service. Lucy also joined the equestrian team, and was a member of the Parked Elephant Events Society.

The Events Management degree was a sandwich course with a placement year, and Lucy found a placement at a local wedding venue close to where she lived.

“When it came to applying for jobs at the end of my fourth year I was very lucky to be offered a job with my placement company, and I stayed there for many years progressing through the company and managing multiple teams.”

Now a Wedding Manager at Eastington Park in Gloucestershire, Lucy believes students should take the opportunities available, not only helping to make friends and enjoy the experiences, but to build vital career skills. She added: “Through participating in extra activities I met lots of new people and got involved with events outside of the lecture theatre such as organising the Graduation Ball, all really useful experiences.”
