I’ve worked with the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service

Emily is a second-year student studying Paramedic Science.

Since starting at UoG, my learning has been a mix of both theory and practical sessions which has allowed me to learn and practise the necessary skills which I have later been able to apply in practice.

Having placement blocks with South West Ambulance Service has not only developed my knowledge but my confidence has grown as well. In addition, I have had the experience of working with the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) on jobs for placement which has not only been very exciting but incredibly insightful.

Working on the ambulance with paramedics combined with teaching from lecturers with varied backgrounds has been an amazing and valuable experience to my development and learning.

A simulated Major Incident was organised by the University incorporating all healthcare roles. This was an amazing learning experience allowing me to understand the role of a paramedic but also understand the patient’s perspective in both the pre-hospital and hospital setting.
