Maisy’s transition from education to employment

Maisy Watkins, Criminology and Sociology graduate.

“My role involves working with teams across the NSPCC to develop and deliver programmes to support parents, carers, and professionals to keep children safe online.

My pathway to my career really began in my 3rd year when volunteering was really encouraged, and I began volunteering at the Nelson Trust Women’s Centre in Gloucester, where I was given my own case to work on.

This supported my dissertation, but also helped me gain the relevant experience to secure a paid role at the Women’s Centre after graduation. I then moved to Barnardo’s in 2020 before starting my current role with the NSPCC in 2022.

A lot of the skills I learnt at the University have been transferred into all roles, such as analysing data, writing reports and being able to meet deadlines.

Another huge help at the University was the emotional support from my lecturers. It can be a daunting thought coming to the end of 3rd year and feeling uncertain about what steps to take moving forward, and my lecturers were able to provide reflection and support around the transition from education to employment.

My advice would be to utilise your support network at the University as they are there to help and try to find the time to volunteer as it provides you with first-hand experience that you can’t learn from a book.”
