Music Business graduate lands dream career at DMY Artists

Haaris Sarkar is a Music Business (MMM) graduate who began his professional career in the music industry during his placement year. He now works in London as an A&R and the label manager of multi-faceted music company DMY Artists (Dummy Mag).

“I’ve always been set on working in the business side of music. I knew from the beginning that it is a super competitive industry but I always felt that the uni, specifically the MMM course, was setting me up to be as prepared as I possibly could be to jump into the industry as soon as I graduated. I was fortunate enough to land a placement at an indie Grime record label in London for my third year, which was of course hugely beneficial. I was then taken on for a full-time role once I’d graduated which is really the ideal scenario.”

After working in his first post-grad position for over 3 years, Haaris then moved onto DMY Artists with the title A&R/Label manager. Based in Haggerston, London, DMY is a new type of music company that supports artists via distribution, publishing and recordings solutions, as well as their online media platform.

“Getting to that ‘dream career’ is a case of building blocks. I had a very basic foundation of knowledge of the industry when I started my degree but I put my head down and took everything in, whilst applying that growing knowledge on the practical side of the course. In my placement and first proper role, I managed to gain experience in a varied range of skillsets which aligned with the diversity of my course, setting me up nicely for where I am now.

“Today, I’m very grateful to be part of an exciting new company with lots of responsibility. From brand new artists to more established acts, we only work with artists we love”. DMY Artists has worked with the likes of Ragz Originale, Meron T and Blay Vision. The company also put on a live stream show over the pandemic featuring the likes of Skepta and Arlo Parks.

“The music industry is constantly morphing and evolving. This course gives you the big picture of how and why the industry has changed over the years which gives you an insight and deeper understanding that is very difficult to obtain in any other way. It gave me a huge competitive edge after graduating.”
