Phil extended rugby team’s world record winning run

Phil Llewellyn studied Sports Coaching as a mature student aged 26. He is currently working for the Irish Rugby Football Union, as well as coaching for Hinkley Rugby Club, who play in National 2 North in the RFU league.

“I developed myself in terms of academic knowledge as well as having a real practical opportunity to apply what I was learning almost on a daily basis.” 

“I’d spent a number of years developing my career and it got to a stage where I thought I knew as much as I was going to know without investing some time in myself, career and in my journey.

I developed myself in terms of academic knowledge as well as having a real practical opportunity to walk out of lectures and apply what I was learning almost on a daily basis. The course was hands on, I remember landing on my head in a gymnastics session trying to do a front flip in the sports hall behind us! You could get stuck in and have a real go at things.

I was appointed as the head coach for the Cyprus rugby side whilst I was here and I was able to apply things that I was learning in lectures. I extended their world record run from 22 to 23 winning games.

The learning about leadership and management on the course directly translated into what I was able to bring and add to that environment. I’ve certainly been able to access jobs and deliver quality that I probably wouldn’t have before. At the end of the four years I sat back and looked at what I’d achieved and the experiences I’d had and I wouldn’t change any of it. It was a real boost to me in terms of what I can deliver and the quality of what I was doing.”
