Supportive lecturers and fantastic placement opportunities

Rhian Mills, graduate in Early Childhood Studies BA (Hons).

“I graduated in Early Childhood Studies in 2019. I moved from Southampton University studying Children’s nursing to University of Gloucestershire. Although it was a big leap to make, I do not have a single regret due to the incredible time I had at the University.

Throughout my time studying ECS, I made great connections with all the lecturers, they are supportive, friendly, and so knowledgeable about early years. Not forgetting their passion, experience and teaching, it was clear that the lecturers adored their field of practice and often discuss anecdotes to support students for how theories look within the natural practice.

The module content throughout the course gave me a wide breadth of knowledge, such as theories of learning and how you can support and grow children’s learning. The choices of modules offered in 3rd year allowed students to craft their own degree. I specialised in Health for Life, a field for which I am passionate about, and has given me a brilliant foundation to build on through practice.

The placements are also fantastic opportunities to experience the field and get a taster of what area you may like to specialise in. My placements were at a private nursery, primary school, special school and private school. These experiences helped me figure out where I wanted to go. Placements are also brilliant at showing you how other people practice – you can work with a wide variety of people with years of experience which is so valuable.

Sweden was an incredible learning opportunity, and I would urge anyone who can go, to experience it. Not only for educational purposes but viewing the hugely different culture which was eye-opening. I believe the things I learned during that trip still influence the way I practice today. The Scandinavian approach to education was so informative and valuable lessons can be learnt from their attitude and pedagogy.

The course content fully equipped me for where I am now. I work within a nursery school focused on children who have English as an additional language, and many have complex Special Educational Needs. Due to the knowledge and experience gained through placements and the ECS course, I went into my job with the confidence of knowing I could succeed and make a huge difference to the lives of the children and families I support.

The knowledge of research and theories learned through my undergraduate degree have also supported me to continue my education. I am currently finishing my Master’s at University of Gloucestershire, a concept I never thought would be possible due to achieving average results at school. I believe this reflects the support and the attitude that the staff within the Early Childhood Studies course have. They are so encouraging and really boosted my confidence and self-belief that after the course I really could go on to do anything.

Finally, the community that the Early Childhood Studies course has is incredible, being a small cohort creates a really supportive group of people. I made friends that are still a huge part of my life, but also, the lecturers are still supporting me professionally and academically.”
