Transforming lives through music

Hamish is a popular music graduate who now works as Senior Music Leader for Music Works, a charity that specialises in transforming lives through music.

“I was introduced to community music in one of the second-year modules of Popular Music at University of Gloucestershire. Before university, my understanding of music leading was that only of a music teacher in schools, which I now know is simply not the case. The course not only enhanced my music making, where I joined a band and played shows and festivals, but it provided me with crucial networking moments, like meeting The Music Works, a charity in Gloucestershire, who work with young people in a range of challenging circumstances, providing music opportunities, where I then volunteered throughout my time at university.

“I now work as a Senior Music Leader leading music workshops across production, performance and song-writing, both in schools and the community, for a huge range of young people including those in Alternative Provision Schools and SEN/D schools. We ensure our work is as contemporary and accessible as possible, so young people make the music they really want to make. I’m also super involved with the content creation and marketing for the charity as well as our festivals and events work.”
