BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Top reasons to study this course

Biomedical Science is at the forefront of pioneering advances in medicine. In leading-edge laboratory facilities set in the heart of our historic campus, you’ll explore this vibrant field.

The course will take you through a series of health laboratory challenges led by both academic and NHS staff, training you in the diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and prevention of disease.

With a focus on practical exploration and assessment, these exercises will build your capability and confidence to undertake your own laboratory research and work-based modules will give you the opportunity to develop your skills and employability.

You’ll finish the course well-prepared to graduate to a career in biomedical research or healthcare services, or to progress to professional training in medicine, dentistry, nursing or teaching.

Your first year on the course will introduce the essentials of anatomy, physiology, cells, infection, immunity, biochemistry, microbiology and genetics. While developing a grounding in these key topics, you’ll be well supported in your transition to studying Biomedical Science at university and be given personal access to the Fundamentals of Biomedical Science book series.

You’ll rotate through key themes in histopathology, clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, haematology and virology in your second year, debating contemporary issues and gaining key skills in data analysis.

By the third year you’ll develop specialisms in biotechnology, neurobiology, pharmacology, toxicology, epidemiology and cancer medicine, choosing your own laboratory-based research area for your Dissertation project. You’ll accomplish all this through our focus on practical learning, drawing on and developing a broad spectrum of skills to help you succeed in life beyond University

To support your undergraduate journey, we also offer fee waivers, bursaries and awards, for both UK and International students.

Introducing, preparing and helping you to secure progression to graduate employment or a higher degree is a key part of our course.

In addition to the modules that form our academic themes and skill pathways, we have work-based learning modules in Years 2 and 3 in the form of short, 10 day internships and longer, 9-12 month placements. These modules not only contribute to your overall degree grade, but enable you to sample flavours of different careers, gain experience for future applications and can often lead to a foot in the door with the company that you place with.

We also offer a valuable year-long NHS placement at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where students gain hands-on experience as biomedical scientists. This placement allows students to complete their IBMS registration portfolio, making them eligible to apply for HCPC registration upon graduation.

We purposely build in a broad and rounded skill set to ensure you are not pigeon-holed by your degree. Our students go on to an incredible range of careers, be they directly related to the subject of Biomedical Science or to sectors that draw on the extensive, transferable skills that you will graduate with.
