Why choose UoG?

Explore the world’s most urgent issues, from migration and global crime to climate and disaster management, on a course ranked 1st in the UK for teaching quality and student satisfaction.

Top reasons to study this course

Population, migration, conflict, development, global crime, health and ageing. These present some of the most pressing social challenges of this century, are inherently geographical in nature and are the focus of our BA Geography degree

You’ll develop a world view, be exposed to a broad range of geographies and acquire an extensive set of research skills. You’ll find that the abilities you develop are readily transferable, with Geographers continuing to be one of the most sought-after graduates, able to turn their hand to a vast range of employment sectors.

With a focus on small class, practical and field learning, you’ll be assessed entirely through coursework to gain a truly representative measure of graduate attributes sought by future employers and for postgraduate study.

To support your undergraduate journey, we also offer fee waivers, bursaries and awards, for both UK and International students. At the end, as a UoG graduate you can choose to pursue one of our postgraduate courses, including our MSc Sustainable Global Futures, receiving a priority offer and an alumni fees discount

Our Royal Geographical Society-accredited course comprises nine core academic themes that reflect some of our planet’s main challenges, opportunities for solutions and our research specialisms. You’ll be introduced to these in your first year and then choose which ones you would like to pursue.

Our human geography themes focus on development, health, population and migration and the geography of crime. You can choose to blend your studies with our physical geography themes on coastal environments, ecology, environmental change and water.

We’ll bring the two sides of the discipline together for you through our environmental geography theme, where we examine lessons from past population collapses and apply them to contemporary disaster management.

Against this backdrop of academic themes, we also have skills pathways on research & fieldwork, GIS and remote sensing, data analytics and visualisation and artificial intelligence. Again, we’ll introduce these in your first year, then choice becomes available.

In all of this, your performance will be assessed entirely through a rich range of coursework types to gain a truly representative measure of graduate attributes sought by future employers and for postgraduate study.

Our focus on small class, practical and field learning means our course is delivered entirely face-to-face, with options for short online meetings if you choose. In Year 1, you can expect to be on campus at least 4 days per week, with your weekly calendar shifting in later years depending on your choice of modules.

Introducing, preparing and helping you to secure progression to graduate employment or a higher degree is designed into the course.

In addition to the modules that form our academic themes and skill pathways, there are work-based learning modules in Years 2 and 3 in the form of short, 10 day internships and longer, 9-12 month placements.

These modules will not only contribute to your overall degree grade, but enable you to sample flavours of different careers, gain experience for future applications and can often lead to a foot in the door at the company you place with.

We purposely build in a broad and rounded skill set to ensure you are not pigeon-holed by your degree. Our students go onto an incredible range of careers, be they directly related to the subject of Geography or to sectors that draw on the extensive, transferable skills that you will graduate with.
