Geography lies at the centre of many of the world’s most pressing issues. Our BA Human Geography course focuses exclusively on the human dimension of the discipline, enabling you to specialise in the socio-geographic challenges of our time.  

You’ll study topics including population, migration, geopolitics, sustainability, health, ageing, development, conflict, global crime and inequalities. This breadth of content coupled with the development of an extensive range of qualitative, statistical and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) research skills will prepare you for a career in a vast range of employment sectors. 

With a focus on small class, practical and field learning, you will be assessed entirely by coursework to gain a truly representative measure of graduate attributes sought by future employers and for postgraduate study.

The course comprises nine core academic themes that reflect some of our planet’s main challenges, opportunities for solutions and our research specialisms. You’ll be introduced to these in your first year then choose which ones you’ would’d like to pursue.  

Physical geography themes focus on coastal environments, ecology, environmental change and water. You can choose to blend your studies with human geography themes on development, health, population and migration and the geography of crime.

There are skills pathways on research and fieldwork, GIS and remote sensing, data analytics and visualisation and AI.

Your performance will be assessed entirely through a rich range of coursework types to gain a truly representative measure of graduate attributes sought by future employers and for postgraduate study. 

The course is delivered entirely face-to-face, with options for short online meetings. In year 1, you can expect to be on campus at least 4 days per week, with your weekly calendar shifting in later years depending on your choice of modules. 

Introducing, preparing and helping you to secure progression to graduate employment or a higher degree is designed into the course.

In addition to the modules that form our academic themes and skill pathways, there are work-based learning modules in Years 2 and 3 in the form of short, 10 day internships and longer, 9-12 month placements.

These modules will not only contribute to your overall degree grade, but enable you to sample flavours of different careers, gain experience for future applications and can often lead to a foot in the door at the company you place with. 

We purposely build in a broad and rounded skill set to ensure you are not pigeon-holed by your degree. Our students go on to an incredible range of careers, be they directly related to the subject of Geography or to sectors that draw on the extensive transferable skills you’ll graduate with.
