Fuente ovejuna is a tragi-comedy by Lope de Vega written about 1614. It is based on a real uprising in the village of Fuente ovejuna in Andalucia in 1476.
Against the vicious dominance of The Spanish Inquisition, the plot centres on the relationship between the ‘noble’ Knight Commander of Calatrava and the villagers who rise up against him and stand together.
The play asks ‘is nobility defined only by social rank?’ and looks at themes of justice, loyalty, female emancipation, sacrifice and true love.
