Placement Code of Practice
Short term and 12-month placements
Our placement code of practice aims to:
- Explain in simple terms what our students can expect from the University
- Outline what is reasonably expected of students by the University
To access support from the Career Studio
- Visit UniHub to access career and placement support, including booking an appointment with a Career Coach
- For support with your search, or if you have any questions, please email [email protected]
To access the Career Placement Management System (CPMS)
Searching for Placement
You can expect to:
- Access support from the Career Studio for all aspects of your placement search, including application and interview advice with the Career Coaches, access to advertised placement opportunities via the UniHub portal, and support regarding the academic relevance of your placement from your Module Tutor
- Have access to workshops (where relevant, and in partnership with academic staff) from the Careers and Employability team to focus on the placement search
- Have access to placement opportunities advertised by the Careers and Employability team on the UniHub portal and (where relevant) receive opportunities to meet and network with employers providing placement opportunities.
We expect you:
- To secure your placement yourself – the University or Careers and Employability team will not place you in a role (with the exception of Teacher Education and Health and Social Care, where placements are allocated to students)
- To be proactive in making full use of all the support, activities, resources, workshops, and opportunities available through the Careers and Employability team, the wider University, and beyond
- If completing a formal application for placement, to thoroughly research and prepare your applications, gaining advice and support from the Career Studio
- To recognise that once you have verbally accepted a placement offer it is unprofessional to withdraw later without exceptional reasons
- To ensure you complete the required steps of the placement approval process via the Careers Placement Management System (known as CPMS – the system through which the majority of UoG placements will be managed)
- If applicable, to be fully informed and updated on travel restrictions, insurances, additional costs that may be in place before, during and after your placement and of any compulsory Tier 4 Visa compliance checks required
- To confirm with your placement provider whether a DBS check is required for your placement, and if so, to complete your application before your placement starts -information for this is found in the placement approval process pages on Moodle.
During Placement
You can expect:
- To be briefed by the Module Tutor on all key aspects of your placement relating to assessment and professional conduct
- For 12-month placements, to be allocated a Visiting Tutor (member of the academic team). In cases where a personal visit is not possible you should expect contact via email, phone, Teams and/or Skype
- To access advice from the Career Studio on how to align your placement experience with your career plan
- For any issues that arise during placement, you should email [email protected] and your Module Tutor (and Visiting Tutor, if applicable) to make them aware of the issue that has arisen as quickly as possible. Your email will then be assigned to the most appropriate Careers and Employability team member to help, and they will contact you directly to offer support/help to resolve the issue
- Please note, this is within office hours – if you experience a significant emergency outside of office hours, please call Campus Security on 01242 714934, available 24 hours a day, who will help to link you with appropriate support (this is not for general issues and non-emergencies)
- If your emergency requires the emergency services, please make sure you call them immediately.
We expect you:
- For 12-month placements, to organise your meeting with your Visiting Tutor directly, arranging a time to suit you, your Tutor, and your manager.
- To inform the university as outlined above if you experience any issues or have any concerns whilst on placement
- To complete the relevant placement approval process via CPMS and ensure your placement has been approved before your placement starts
- For 12-month placements, to attend any final Placement Briefings before your placement commences, and mid-placement conferences organised by your academic community
- To behave professionally at all times on placement and complete the relevant assessment work.
