Annual Chancellor’s Lecture to ask: Is Artificial Intelligence going too far?

​Dame Wendy Hall, a Director of the Web Science Institute, presents ‘Artificial Intelligence: through the looking glass’ at the University of Gloucestershire’s annual Chancellor’s Lecture.

Held at Park Campus in Cheltenham on Wednesday 15 November, she will discuss whether the risks of emerging superintelligences outweigh the benefits this technology could bring.

The talk will also explore how new advancements in Artificial Intelligence, such as the ability to spot investment opportunities and describe photos for the visually impaired, could be as transformative as the Industrial Revolution.

Dame Wendy is leading a major review to consider how Government and industry could work together to support this technology, from early research to commercialisation. She was one of the first computer scientists to undertake research in multimedia and hypermedia and has been at its forefront ever since.

The annual Chancellor’s Lecture provides the opportunity for the University Chancellor, Baroness Rennie Fritchie, to invite a distinguished guest to deliver a Public Lecture at the university. Admission to the lecture is free, but tickets need be reserved in advance.
