Businesses come together to help shape University’s new engineering programmes

Leading businesses from across Gloucestershire and beyond attended a launch event for the University of Gloucestershire’s brand new suite of courses in Engineering Technologies this week (Monday 25 March).

The University’s School of Business and Technology will be starting degree programmes in a range of engineering specialisms this September, led by Dr Salah Al-Majeed, Head of Engineering Technologies, who joined the institution in 2018.

The University programmes will be developed in close collaboration with Industry and FE Partners including with support from Gloucester-based Gloucestershire Engineering Technology (GET) who have been providing work-based learning in engineering for 40 years.

There was a real buzz at the event, which was held at the University’s Park campus in Cheltenham, as it played host to prominent engineering and manufacturing businesses from across the region, including Versarien, Festo Dioatic, Trelleborg, Kohler Mira, Renishaw, Ultra Electronics, Invista and Borwell.  Businesses were given a background and overview of the proposed courses by Vice-Chancellor, Stephen Marston, Dr Salah Al-Majeed and Linsey Temple and Warren Thomas from Gloucestershire Engineering Technology before getting involved in a feedback session to help co-design and feedback on the proposed curricula.

The new Engineering Technologies courses have been designed with strong links to industry and this event was yet further evidence of the importance placed on connecting with business.

Leonie Burton, Client Development Manager in the School of Business and Technology, said: “It’s important that our new courses reflect the requirements of engineering companies, and we were pleased that so many representatives from the well regarded Gloucestershire engineering businesses came to our launch event. They were really engaged with the session and the cluster of programmes that will be starting in September, giving really useful feedback. We’re very positive about future joint collaboration with these businesses and working with GET.”
