Flying Ant Day is coming

Professor Adam Hart from the University of Gloucestershire shares his thoughts on Flying Ant Day and what we could possibly expect this summer.

Flying Ant Day is when the both queen and male ants sprout wings and mate in mid-air. Depending on the weather, the event can last for around 4-5 days. This mating period occurs usually at the end of July or at the beginning of August. The reason why ants do this is so that the new queen ants can leave the colony where they were born, mate with a male ant and to start a new colony.

Professor Hart suspects that “With 2016 already providing to be a wet one, it will be interesting to see whether we get a repeat of 2012, when most of the flights were compressed into just a couple of days in July and August between the rain”.
