Expert will ‘explore the minds of murderers’ at public lecture

‘Relating Rape and Murder’ by Dr Jane Monckton-Smith, Senior Lecturer in Criminology.

Dr Jane Monckton-Smith, Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the university and an expert in the areas of homicide, stalking, domestic abuse and criminal investigation, will continue the university’s Public Lecture series with her lecture ‘Exploring the Minds of Murderers’, at 6pm on 18 February 2015.

Jane is an expert in the field, including chairing Domestic Homicide and Mental Health Reviews, advising police at a local and national level and working with stalking, domestic abuse and homicide charities. Jane also works with individuals bereaved by homicide to help with police and criminal justice processes and speaks with murderers about their crimes. Her recent work on the Domestic Abuse Reference Tool (DART), piloted by Gloucestershire police, was endorsed by actor Hugh Grant and the charity Protection Against Stalking (PAS).

Jane said: “Murder is the most serious of crimes, but it is perhaps, more than any other crime, the crime of ordinary people.  How much do we know about murderers and their motivations, and about who is most likely to kill and most likely to be a victim?  Can we recognise some of the danger signs, and how easy is it to catch a murderer? These are some of the questions that I will be exploring in the lecture.”

As well as speaking regularly in public and in the media, Jane has written numerous books on homicide and investigation. Her 2010 book, Relating Rape and Murder, focused on the relationship between sexual assault and murder. Jane also has two other books on homicide, and one on forensic investigation.

Public Lecture series was launched with a sell-out lecture from Adam Hart in January. Reception drinks will be held from 5pm in Elwes Building reception. Tickets are free, but booking is essential.
