Spotlight on new artists as the University hosts BBC Introducing

A special showcase of musical talent and industry experts will feature in a live broadcast from BBC Introducing in the West from 8pm at the University’s Park campus, this Saturday 18 November.

Staff and students from the University have been working together with BBC Introducing to produce a multimedia event which will go out on BBC Radio Bristol, BBC Radio Gloucestershire, BBC Somerset and BBC Wiltshire.

The evening, called ‘Making Money from Your Music’, will see presenters Sam Bonham and Richard Pitt introduce live music from bands Low Chimes, Mauwe, Rhain and Watercolours, who will perform in front of an audience of students from the University.

Industry experts from The Musician’s Union and PRS will also take to the stage to discuss the impact money has on emerging artists, from crowdfunding, Spotify and streaming to radio plays and signing record deals.

Created in 2007, BBC Introducing supports unsigned musicians under one brand, providing them with exposure through broadcasts, online coverage and the opportunity to play on one of the BBC Introducing stages at a UK festival or have their music playlisted on a network BBC station such as Radio 1.

Conal Kelly, a third year popular music student from the band ‘Watercolours’, said:

“When fans see you’re playing at a BBC Introducing event, they see you as a serious artist; it’s like receiving a seal of approval from the industry. It’s so important to undiscovered bands who can’t afford PR teams, to be given opportunities to play live on these platforms and reach new audiences.”

Richard Pitt, BBC Introducing presenter, said:

“Forging a career in music has always been about so much more than just writing great songs. This event will give us an excellent opportunity to hear from musicians and industry experts about some of the ways that you can stay creative without living on the breadline.”

Andrew Lansley, Senior Lecturer in Music & Audio, added:

“It is such a great opportunity for our students at the School of Media to be able to host BBC Introducing once again at the University of Gloucestershire. To have our students perform and produce alongside BBC staff, collaborating on a live multi-platform media broadcast is an incredible chance for them to gain valuable experience – and unique insight – into the creative and technical challenges of a contemporary broadcast environment.”

The show will be streamed Live from 8pm to 10pm via the BBC Introducing Facebook page and will also be available to watch on iPlayer and which will remain on the site for thirty days after the broadcast.
