About the end-point assessor
University of Gloucestershire is a leading provider of teacher education. Our partnerships place the transformation of every child and its trainee teachers at the heart of all that we do. For over 150 years the University has been making a significant contribution to the training and assessment of trainee teachers across all age phases: early years, primary and secondary. The University fully embraces the diversity of schools and educational settings and works with over 400 early years settings, schools and colleges.
The University thrives on the opportunity to further enhance our longstanding international reputation for high quality teaching and research.
Our end-point assessment team comprises expert and experienced subject specialist teacher educators. All have a deep and current knowledge and understanding of the requirements and standards for qualified teacher status (QTS).
Phases and Subjects
The University is available to undertake end-point assessments in the following subjects:
- Early-Years ITT QTS
- Primary QTS
- Secondary QTS: Maths, English, Science, Art & Design, Physical Education, Geography, History and Computing.
Locations
The University will be able to undertake endpoint assessments in the East Midlands, West Midlands and South West regions.
Key Requirements for end-point assessment
Before going forward for the end-point assessment gateway, the apprentice must have:
- Achieved at least a GCSE grade C or grade 4 (or equivalent) in Mathematics and English. In addition, primary apprentices must have achieved at least a GCSE grade C or grade 4 (or equivalent) in Science.
- Successfully completed an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course delivered by a provider accredited by the National College for Teaching and Leadership and obtained Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Completed a portfolio of evidence compiled during the ITT year.
- The end-point assessment must take place during the fourth term of the apprenticeship and within 3 months of the gateway having been reached. It can take place in the educational setting in which the training/employment has taken place or at another place of employment (an alternative educational setting).
The University will liaise with the school and the apprentice to arrange a mutually convenient date and time for the assessment day. For quality assurance purposes 10% of assessments will involve an assessor being shadowed by another University assessor. The programme for the day will be facilitated by the employing school and must involve:
- A lesson observation – observed and assessed by a University of Gloucestershire end point assessor (UoG EPA) followed by a professional dialogue. The apprentice must produce a lesson plan in line with employer’s format which will be given to the assessor in advance of the lesson.
- A professional discussion – this is designed to assess the apprentices’ knowledge, skills and behaviours in relation to the Teachers’ Standards. The panel for the discussion will consist of the UoG EPA, a representative from the apprentice’s initial teacher training provider and a representative from the employer (for example mentor or professional tutor) who has been involved in the apprentice’s training and development. To support the discussion the apprentice must bring their portfolio of work completed during their ITT year. The portfolio will not be assessed but should aid the discussion.
After the assessment day
When the end-point assessment is completed the UoG EPA will examine the evidence and determine the final grade (inadequate, pass or outstanding) by working within the framework of the relevant quality assurance and moderation procedures. A 10% sample will be taken for moderation purposes and all assessment outcomes will be ratified by an internal Assessment Panel. The Assessment Panel is chaired by a senior member of the School of Education and Applied Sciences. All UoG EPAs and an external moderator form the Panel. After ratification the UoG EPA will inform the apprentice and employer in writing within 7 working days about the outcome and final grade. The University will also inform the ESFA for certification purposes.
Reassessment
The apprentice is permitted to one retake of the end-point assessment after 1 month and within 6 months of a failed end-point assessment. Where the apprentice has mitigating or special considerations these will be considered under the relevant University’s policy. Reasonable adjustments to time-frames and assessment locations will be made where appropriate.
