High level competition

There’s a long legacy of top sports people and teams at the University of Gloucestershire. If this is the level you want to perform at, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Play as part of a professional or competitive sports team and compete in BUCS leagues
  • Pursue Olympic or Commonwealth Games success
  • Access top-class coaches and specialist training programmes
  • Be part of a driven and talented sports community
  • Represent the University of Gloucestershire around the UK and overseas
  • Play in Varsity against the University of Worcester

Play for fun

If local leagues and playing for fun is more your game, there are social teams and membership options for everyone. There’s fantastic tradition of ‘Blue and Blue’ sport, offering regular club matches, competitions, leagues and social sessions across more than 30 sports.

You can see all the fantastic sports available on the Students’ Union website. All our teams are student-led with support from the SU, and each club offers superb opportunities for you to develop your leadership skills and your sporting technique. It’s your chance to meet life-long friends and have experiences that will enhance and enrich your university experience.

One of the highlights of the sporting year is our annual Varsity Series against local rivals the University of Worcester, contested to see who will be champion of the region.

Being chosen to play in the Varsity starting line-up is a huge honour and the week-long event series is attended by thousands of students at major venues across the two counties, including Sixways Stadium, the home of Worcester Warriors.

Rugby League

One of our premier clubs, boasting a proud history of fully capped internationals as well as countless students who have represented England/Ireland/Scotland Universities. COVID-allowing, we also have a number of current students hoping to be part of international squads to go to the Student RL world cup.

You could become part of this high-achieving club, who have helped pave the way for rugby league in the south. They have recently increased the number of teams to accommodate players who are new to rugby league, and the impressive set-up means less experienced players have the chance to quickly improve their game and become premier-level players.
