I have worked in sport and education since 2001, beginning my career as a sports coach before moving into secondary education as a physical education teacher and later head of department.
In 2014, I transitioned into higher education, teaching and leading programmes in physical education and sports coaching. I am now a member of the School of Education, Health and Science leadership team, where I provide strategic oversight of outreach and engagement with schools and colleges, and lead on student recruitment.
In this role, I focus on building sustainable partnerships, aligning activity with the University’s strategic priorities, and developing initiatives that enhance access, participation, and student success.
Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE) – 2018 onwards
Association for Physical Education, Business Associate – 2022 onwards
I have taught across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in physical education, teacher education, and sports coaching, with a particular interest in innovative approaches that enhance motivation, engagement, and meaningful learning. As a multi-award-winning lecturer, I have received national recognition for the quality of my teaching and student support.
My work in course and curriculum design has focused on developing high-impact strategies – particularly in employability, assessment, and feedback – that directly support student success and graduate outcomes.
I have extensive experience supervising research projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, across qualitative and quantitative methodologies, with a strong interest in action research.
I particularly enjoy practical delivery and creating real-world learning opportunities that connect theory to practice and prepare students for professional contexts.
My research focuses on physical education curriculum design, pedagogical approaches, teacher development, and physical activity promotion. Closely aligned with the growing body of work on meaningful physical education and sport, my doctoral research explored the integration of lifestyle sports (e.g. parkour) within school PE, drawing on insights from both pupils and teachers to better understand how such activities can enhance enjoyment and engagement.
Alongside this, I have contributed to large-scale international projects, including the Erasmus Active Games 4 Change initiative, which examined the use of sport and active games as rehabilitation tools for young offenders.
I regularly disseminate my research through peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and invited contributions, as well as presenting at local, national, and international conferences and professional events. This work aims to shape both policy and practice by connecting research insights with real-world educational contexts. I am always keen to explore new collaborations and knowledge exchange opportunities, so please do connect if you think we could work together.
