Starting my career as a talent scout for Warner Music and discovering Ride, I went on to establish indie boutique label Indolent within major BMG. After success with Sleeper, the Wannadies and Stephen Duffy, I left to set up Damien Hirst’s record label, then established myself as a journalist and music editor with AOL Music, as well as writing and presenting for BBC’s Front Row.
I have written a number of music books including The Virgin Guide to Internet Music (Virgin Books); The Art of The LP (Sterling); Pink Flag (Antar); A Perfect Silence (Rocket 88).
I teach a variety of music business areas including artist development, law, copyright, management and PR, as well as a number of theory modules that explore economic and sociological backgrounds to popular music. In all these areas I focus on making sure that students get a good grounding in the industry in which they have chosen to work but also develop exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
I’m currently researching for my next book which will continue my exploration of the way the popular music narrative changes depending on whether viewed from a business or a fan perspective. I recently presented a paper, File Under Popular, at the Mainstream Silence conference at the University of Strasbourg.
I teach four days a week at UoG which leaves me time for my research, as well as writing for music magazines.
I am personal tutor for a number of first- and second-year undergraduates.
