Brief Description

This module aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to plan, teach and assess Knowledge and Understanding of the World and Geography. There is a particular emphasis on planning sequences of lessons and developing an understanding of the principle of planning for progression. During this module there will be opportunities for students to work with children.

Indicative Syllabus -

1. Exploration of key aspects of Geographical subject knowledge, including independent student enquiry and research

2. Geographical enquiry and the use of fieldwork and modelling in the EYFS, KS1 and KS2

3. Creative and challenging approaches to the teaching of Geography

4. Planning sequences of lessons and the principle of planning for progression

5. Assessing pupils’ progress in Geography


Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1. have a knowledge and understanding of the main statutory curriculum requirements

2. have an understanding of the underlying concepts and principles that define the distinctive nature of the subject and demonstrate a critical understanding of developments in Geography

3. have a secure knowledge of Geography and associated curriculum areas

4. be able to select appropriate teaching resources and teaching and learning approaches and justify their use in a particular lesson

5. know how to plan and teach well-structured lessons and sequences of lessons that promote good progress and outcomes by pupils

6. know and understand the underlying principles of assessing pupils’ work in Geography

7. to be able to recognise underachievement and respond positively and appropriately to individual and diverse learning needs through the planning, teaching, assessment and evaluation of the subject across all learners
