Education and Psychology

This course explores how psychological theory helps us understand learning, development and wellbeing in education. You’ll examine how individuals think, feel and behave in educational contexts, and how this knowledge can be used to support learners more effectively.

You’ll study key areas such as development, mental health, identity, motivation and behaviour, drawing on both educational and psychological perspectives. Teaching is interactive and discussion-based, encouraging you to apply theory to real-world educational challenges.

As you progress, you’ll develop your ability to analyse research, think critically and apply psychological insight in practice. You’ll also have opportunities to connect your learning to real-world contexts through professional practice and work-based learning experiences.

This course opens up a wide range of people-focused careers that draw on psychological understanding within education and related settings. Graduates go into roles such as learning mentor, behaviour support assistant, pastoral or wellbeing support worker, youth support worker, family support worker and inclusion assistant.

The course also supports progression into psychology-informed roles, including assistant educational psychologist, psychology assistant and research assistant positions. These often form part of established pathways into postgraduate study and professional training.

You’ll develop strong analytical, communication and reflective skills, alongside experience of applying theory to real educational challenges. These skills are valued across education, health, community and support sectors.

Graduates progress into teacher training, education-based psychology routes, mental health and wellbeing-focused postgraduate study, and wider professional training, providing a strong foundation for careers focused on supporting learning, development and wellbeing.
