We offer a secondary teaching PGCE in a range of subjects

If you're looking for a lifelong, challenging and exciting career, teaching could be for you.

This programme aims to help you become an engaging and effective teacher of your subject within the 11–18 age range. You will spend a minimum of 24 weeks in at least two schools, where you will receive invaluable support from experienced teachers. You will return to university throughout the year for professional development and seminars.

Study style

School placements are jointly assessed by staff within schools and the university. There are written assignments to support your teaching.

Entry requirements

  • At least a 2.2 honours degree or equivalent in an area that supports one of your main subject specialisms
  • A minimum grade C in English Language and Mathematics at GCSE
  • You must pass the QTS skills test prior to commencing the course
  • All applications should be made through UCAS www.ucas.com
  • EU and international students need IELTS 6.5 overall (no less than 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in any other band) or equivalent

School-based Initial Teacher Education

You will spend a minimum of 24 weeks in at least two schools, where you will receive invaluable support from experienced teachers. Through our long-established networks, we can offer you a wide variety of placement opportunities.

Wide range of subject specialisms

Choose from Art & Design, Computer Science with ICT, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, Religious Education, Physical Education, Science (Biology), Science (Chemistry) and Science (Physics). You will have weekly subject sessions with your Subject Leader throughout the programme.

60 masters level credits

There is the opportunity within the PGCE programme to obtain 60 credits towards a masters degree qualification, to be followed during your Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) year with an opportunity to gain a further 60 credits.
