Teaching is an exciting, challenging and rewarding career. Our outstanding (OFSTED, 2015) teacher training will build upon your current degree and/or experience to develop the skills and knowledge required for a positive future in professional education.

The University of Gloucestershire was rated outstanding in our most recent OFSTED inspection (2015) and we offer our students an exceptional training experience. The PGCE Secondary award, with QTS, in the following core subjects: Art & Design, Mathematics and Physical Education.

This one year, full time programme aims to help you become a competent and effective teacher of your subject within the secondary age range. You will spend 26 weeks in at least two schools where you will receive invaluable support from experienced teachers. You will return to central provision at regular intervals throughout the year for professional studies development and subject pathway seminars. The university works together with our local and regional partners to provide a well-established and successful school based programme with academic rigour.

There are a wide range of placements available which have been arranged with key considerations in mind: experience of different age-ranges and schools, accessibility/travel time, students previous experience and so on. The tuition and school placements are organised in blocks throughout the year. The normal working week is approximately 35 hours and normal school hours apply when students are on placement (8am-5pm), with additional independent study.

Employment rates have been consistently high for graduates and we offer you the opportunity to gain Masters credits which count towards a full Masters degree. This can be used to take your career to the next level at a subsequent time. All students undertake Masters level modules in addition to other compulsory modules. If you pass all elements of the course at Masters level, the award title will carry Masters credits and QTS.

Study style

The course is assessed via summative written assignments, school placements and your individual portfolio which records progress in relation to the QTS standards. All elements must be completed satisfactorily.
