What is Sports Therapy BSc (Hons)?

This contemporary, accredited programme, is designed to make you industry-ready, prepared to work as an innovative, evidence-based, graduate sports therapist.

Led by our Sports Sciences team this programme delivers a full set of competencies, allowing you to examine, assess, and treat musculoskeletal injuries.

On this Society of Sports Therapy accredited course, you will learn injury prevention strategies and rehabilitation skills, to return individuals to full participation. With a focus on opportunity, employability and business entrepreneurship, the comprehensive Sports Therapy curriculum enables you to combine theory, hands-on experience, critical reflection and professional judgement, as you learn to excel in the latest techniques in Sports Therapy.

The course is underpinned by sports science disciplines, and will develop advanced skills in physiology, biomechanics and scientific research methods, throughout your studies.

You’ll join a university where sport is part of the fabric. Study style

Interactive lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions, independent study and e-learning materials make up the course. You are expected to undertake around 24-28 hours of independent study per week. The course is assessed through a range of methods, such as practical assessments, coursework, presentations, case studies, laboratory work, group debates and formal exams.

Throughout your course, you will be expected to manage your time effectively through scheduled taught content and independent study, alongside your placement hours.

There is an 80% attendance policy for this course due to Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body (PSRB).

Entry requirements

    • 120 UCAS tariff points, BBB at A levels, DDM at BTEC, or a Merit in your T-Level.

      If you are unsure whether we could make you an offer or you have any questions, just get in touch with our admissions team who will be able to advise you.

    • English Language or Literature and Maths Grade 4/C in GCSE (or equivalent) are normally required.

    • In order to study this course, offer holders will need to complete a satisfactory DBS and Health Clearance check.

    • This course is available with an additional integrated foundation year. This four year option has lower entry requirements – see below – than the other study type/s available.

      Typical offers
      48 UCAS tariff points, DD at A levels, PPP at BTEC or a Pass in your T Level.

      GCSEs
      Grade C/4 in English Language/Literature and Mathematics, or equivalent (e.g. Level 2 Functional Skills).

    • We welcome applications from mature students (aged 21 and over) and do not necessarily require the same academic qualifications as school leaving applicants, although some entry requirements may still apply for Professionally Accredited Courses. We accept Access to Higher Education Diplomas and make offers on an individual basis.

Learn from a multidisciplinary clinical team and sports scientists at the top of their game

Screen, assess, rehabilitate and treat professional athletes from teams including Cheltenham Town, Forest Green Rovers, West Bromwich Albion, AFC Bournemouth football clubs, and Gloucester Rugby. Treat, rehabilitate and work with semi-professional athletes from local clubs as well as Emergency responders such as Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service.

Learn from multidisciplinary lecturers, experts in their field

Clinical experience includes working within professional rugby league, international squash, semi-professional football and rugby as well as owning successful private practice injury clinics.

Sports Therapy students provide baseline testing for Sports Related Concussion (SRC)

Athletes involved in contact BUCS sports will receive baseline testing on SRC carried out by UoG’s student Sports Therapists across the 2023-24 season.

Alongside Sports Therapy’s matchday provision with BUCS, this is another great step in ensuring student wellbeing is at the forefront of any return to play or study decisions.

Trips and experiences

We regularly arrange trips to local dissection labs, so you can develop your anatomical knowledge alongside visiting St Georges Park for an insight into the professional world of sport and the multidisciplinary team. We also have links with The Chamwell Centre, which is one of the largest hydrotherapy pools in the country to allow students to gain an understanding of how hydrotherapy can be utilised for injury, rehabilitation and for special population groups.

Placements

Work placements are core to the course, with opportunities to gain experience with national, international, amateur sports team and athletes. Work placements have included Gloucester and Worcester Rugby clubs, Oxford City, Bournemouth and Cambridge United football clubs, British American Football, Cheltenham Town FC and many more.
