Tackle the biggest issues shaping our world. From migration and global crime to sustainability and health, you’ll explore society’s most pressing challenges – backed by expert teaching, UK-leading student satisfaction, and unforgettable fieldwork.

Migration. Health. Ageing. Cities. Social Change. These are some of the defining societal challenges shaping your future, are geographical in both cause and solution, and sit at the heart of our BA Human Geography degree and research.

In a world increasingly influenced by AI and automation, human geographers remain essential: connecting social and geographical understanding to tackle complex problems through human insight, judgement and creativity to build a sustainable future.

You’ll develop a world view, be exposed to a broad range of geographies and acquire an extensive range of qualitative, statistical and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills. You’ll find that the abilities you develop are readily transferable, with geographers continuing to be one of the most sought-after graduates, able to turn their hand to a vast range of employment sectors.

With a focus on small class, practical and field learning, you will be assessed entirely by coursework to gain a truly representative measure of graduate attributes sought by future employers and for postgraduate study.

We offer fee waivers, bursaries and awards, for both UK and international students. If you choose to pursue a postgraduate courses at UoG, you’ll receive a priority offer and an alumni fees discount.

Our Royal Geographical Society-accredited course is available in a standard 3 year format or as a 4 year course with placement.

It comprises five core academic themes that reflect some of our planet’s main societal challenges, opportunities for solutions and our research specialisms. You’ll be introduced to these in your first year then choose which ones you’d like to pursue.  There are also highly-transferable skill pathways on research and fieldwork, GIS and remote sensing, data analytics and visualisation, and AI.

Your performance will be assessed entirely through a rich range of coursework types to gain a truly representative measure of graduate attributes sought by future employers and for postgraduate study.

The course is delivered entirely face-to-face, with options for short online meetings. In year 1, you can expect to be on campus at least 4 days per week, with your weekly calendar shifting in later years depending on your choice of modules.

Introducing, preparing and helping you to secure progression to graduate employment or a higher degree is designed into the course.

In addition to the modules that form our academic themes and skill pathways, there are work-based learning modules in Years 2 and 3 in the form of short, 10 day internships and longer, 9-12 month placements.

These modules can contribute to your overall degree grade or credit, and enable you to sample flavours of different careers, gain experience for future applications and can often lead to a foot in the door at the company you place with.

A broad and rounded skill set is deliberately built in to ensure you are not pigeon-holed by your degree. Our students go on to an incredible range of careers, be they directly related to the subject of Human Geography or to sectors that draw on the extensive, transferable skills that you will graduate with.
