What is Communications, PR and the Media MA?

Gain the extra qualifications and knowledge to get ahead in the Public Relations (PR) and communications sector and discover what it takes to create award-winning campaigns.

Learning from lecturers who have come straight from industry, you’ll develop the expertise you need to communicate effectively across digital, social, broadcast and print media.

Influencer-targeting, video, social media, copywriting and more are taught alongside the strategic public relations and campaign planning skills you’ll need to succeed in the modern workplace.

Study style

This degree is very hands-on, including a lot of practical learning supported by a spine of academic theory. There is a big emphasis on industry relevance throughout the one-year course including a strong programme of guest lectures to provide industry links and opportunities for our students.

We also work to live client briefs on some of our modules in areas such as content creation and campaign planning which all help to provide on the job-style experiences.

You’ll have access to facilities described by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council as among the very best in the country – our Media Centre includes professional-standard film, TV, music and news studios as well as editing suites, Mac equipment and production galleries.

Entry requirements

    • You should hold at least a  2.2 Bachelors degree with honours.

    • We will consider a comparable professional or postgraduate qualification

    • Applicants without a bachelors degree but with significant relevant industry experience.

    • EU and international students need IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each component

Our staff have professional experience in the communications industry. Lecturers include a current PR consultancy owner and former Editor of The Citizen newspaper.

We also have a strong programme of guest lecturers each year for students to gain even more industry connections and knowledge. In the 2020/21 year, this has included Sport England, Dyson, UCAS, Reach PLC and award-winning PR agencies Rise at Seven, Red Consultancy, 10 Yetis Digital and Radioactive PR.

Award-winning course associates

Anaïs Merlin, Associate Director and Head of Mobile and Telecoms at CCgroup, a B2B technology PR agency, will be supporting students this year as a course associate. In 2021, she was named on PR Week’s ’30 Under 30 list’ and awarded PR Week’s ‘Young Game Changer of the Year’ award.
