Psychology (Clinical and Health Contexts)

Our Clinical and Health Psychology degree is your first step toward becoming a chartered psychologist, working in areas such as clinical and health psychology.

Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), this degree gives you a broad understanding of psychology alongside a specialist focus on its role in mental and physical health, encouraging you to explore how the line between the two can often be blurred.

Our Psychology BSc (Hons) course scored 92% for academic support in the National Student Survey 2026.

Clinical and health psychologists apply psychological knowledge and skills in clinical and community settings. They contribute to illness prevention, promote health and wellbeing, design and implement interventions, and help shape policies and systems that affect healthcare.

Within your degree, you’ll explore a wide range of theory and knowledge to underpin your understanding of psychology in physical and mental health contexts. The course takes an applied perspective, allowing you to see how psychological principles are used to address real-world health and wellbeing challenges.

You’ll also be encouraged to think critically, question assumptions, and reflect on the social, cultural, and ethical contexts that shape psychological practice.

The course is taught via a mix of interactive lectures and workshops. You’ll be taught by an enthusiastic team of clinicians and academics with diverse research and practice interests, including vaccine hesitancy, living well with long-term health conditions, nature and health, health-related stigma, and many more. 

You will be assigned a personal tutor and a dissertation supervisor to support you in your studies.  

Assessment has been designed to develop the knowledge and skills required of critically reflective and ethical practitioners working within evidence-based practice.  

A range of assessments will be used to support learning, including real-world problems faced by professional psychologists.  

There are no traditional exams – tasks for assessment include reflective portfolios, case studies, essays, presentations, and intervention and evaluation designs.

This course is your first step towards a career as a chartered psychologist in mental or physical health. The degree can help give you an edge when you come to apply for further education to pursue chartership, or can show your expertise in health-related areas when you apply for jobs.  

We also offer a Master’s degree in Health Psychology where you can continue your development towards becoming a chartered health psychologist after you graduate.  

Your future career is important to us, and you’ll be given plenty of opportunities to develop your professional skills, including a placement module in your second year. You’ll also have the opportunity to take a placement year, helping you gain practical experience, build confidence and explore your career options before you graduate.
