This course is based on an active learning approach where students engage with real-world issues in healthcare, within a global context.
With a focus on understanding the importance of policy and research in looking at healthcare issues in specific national settings, this is an ideal professional course for international students who are passionate about improving health outcomes in their home countries.
At the centre of the course are ethical questions about human rights and health inequalities, alongside an understanding of the social determinants of health, illness and disease.
The course will help develop understanding of the role of research and policy in a global context, creating the basis for students to carry out original research in areas of their own choice in the second year.
It will promote and facilitate the search for new knowledge about the complex contemporary health and care challenges facing different communities around the world. The programme seeks to provide you with the foundations and skills for developing solutions to those challenges and translating research knowledge and skills into practice.
Delivery of this course comprises a mix of interactive teaching and independent research. In the first year, students will undertake seminars and workshops with senior academic research staff, with research elements conducted alongside an allocated supervisory team.
A distinctive feature of the programme is the peer support and interaction that results from students sharing the practice issues and challenges in their respective countries. The teaching on the module is, like the form of transformative leadership it seeks to develop, based on collaboration and critical dialogue.
The programme is based on interactive learning experiences in seminars and lectures with a strong emphasis on student-led learning and engagement between students and lecturers. You’ll develop expertise in the issues you feel passionate about.
Throughout the programme staff seek to foster a critical and reflexive understanding of the impact of healthcare policy and research and the role these have in challenging health inequalities.
Please note: undertaking this research degree will require a high level of academic engagement and commitment for the full duration of the course. We therefore strongly advise any student planning to bring dependents with them to consider their options carefully, and make comprehensive plans to ensure that their studies are not adversely affected in any way.
