Brief Description

This module is an introduction to script programming within an existing commercial games engine. The students will be introduced to script programming and develop the knowledge and skills to develop games through the use of scripting within a games engine.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover an introduction to scripted programming within a games engine. This introduction will cover the principles of programming in the scripting language for the games engine, including variable types, code syntax and commenting.

The module will cover how to read and navigate a software Application Programming Interface.

The student will become familiar with the scripting aspects of the games engine and will learn to develop programs that enable and expand upon the non-scripted features offered by the games engine.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1. Understand the importance of a structured approach to the design of the coding aspects of computer games;

2. Analyse and apply appropriate programming techniques in the development of games;

3. Develop an understanding of logical flow and data structures in game development;

4. Use a visual authoring system to design and implement a range of programming exercises and create working games.
