Brief Description

This module affords students an opportunity to explore the potential contribution of Humanities subjects within their wider socio-economic, cultural and ecological context. Through examination of methodological approaches and perspectives, and an experience of applied practice, students will gain insight into the contribution they and their discipline can make in addressing contemporary issues, questions and situations. The project element of the module encourages students to explore ways in which responses to contemporary challenges can be identified and addressed.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will equip students with research, analytical and communication skills through opportunities to explore potential contributions of Humanities disciplines to socio-economic, cultural and ecological issues, questions and situations within their context. Seminars will provide ethical and methodological framework and support for an applied project which might be (though need not be limited to) one of the following:

  • internship/work-based learning;
  • public engagement;
  • community action;
  • social enterprise;
  • social or political activism.

Each project will culminate in a presentation or exhibit of work which will strengthen students’ confidence and facility for professional and public engagement activity both during and after their studies. Students will also be encouraged to develop reflective skills in considering the process and outcomes of, and their own contribution to, a project.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Provide a critical, creative response to opportunities for professional or public engagement.
  2. Demonstrate developed skills in selecting and applying appropriate subject insights and methodologies in researching, evaluating and responding to contemporary issues.
  3. Demonstrate a developed capacity for autonomous learning, accepting responsibility for achieving personal and/or group outcomes.
  4. Identify appropriate opportunities for, and make an informed contribution to, projects of improvement, challenge or development within a work, public, University or community setting.
  5. Present a high quality account of their project, including evidence-based, ethical reflection on their own contribution.
